Skylark is a high desert compound in Landers, California, developed over two years as a place for indoor-outdoor living. Built around a former schoolhouse, the project turns a once-sparse site into a setting for gathering, retreat, and year-round use.
A new pool, cold plunge, and sauna sit alongside a sunken firepit enclosed by hyperadobe walls and a handmade brick Argentine asado. Brown brick, painted timber, copper, and ocotillo give the property an earthy, distinctly local character. Flowering perennials, fragrant sages, and sculptural cacti soften the harder materials and bring seasonal change to the landscape.
Skylark is also operated by Toffey Studio as a successful Airbnb, where it has earned Superhost status and been named a Guest Favorite. Its success as a rental reflects the project’s balance of atmosphere and practicality: it feels transportive, but is designed to be comfortable, welcoming, and easy to inhabit.
The result is both rugged and considered—a place shaped by the desert, designed for hospitality, and made for spending time outdoors.
